Since 1977, the Billie Hardee Home for Boys has provided a safe,
supportive community for at-risk young men, doing such strong work
that the very name "Billie Hardee" has become synonymous with this
mission. Now, a dedicated group of counselors and therapists aims
to expand the public's perception of that well-regarded brand by
providing mental and behavioral health services for all ages
through the Billie Hardee Counseling Place.
For Hardee Home Executive Director Wayne Chapman, the idea to
branch out into counseling services began germinating several years
ago. After Chapman fleshed out the concept with longtime friend
Brad Burgess, the Counseling Place quickly took shape and became a
reality, opening its doors in the summer of 2011.
Burgess, a professional counselor for nearly 20 years, says the
venture was launched to provide easy access and individualized
therapy solutions for people in need.
"There were a lot of people out there who weren't getting their
needs met, so we wanted to try and put something together to better
serve them and meet the needs of the community," he says.
There is little doubt that the mental health system is overtaxed
and sometimes people fall through the cracks. Tales of difficulty
getting appointments (waiting a month or more to meet with a
counselor) and "cookie cutter" processing through the mental health
system (being hastily prescribed drugs or shuttled off to group
therapy) abound. Burgess says the Counseling Place exists to
provide a comfortable, timely and appropriate treatment regimen for
those seeking help.
"We don't believe in the warm body type of counseling where
whoever is available, you just throw them in with them… we try to
make a good clinical match to best meet their needs and help with
their problems," says Burgess. He notes that while the Counseling
Place boasts seven licensed counselors and social workers with
specializations in various fields, if they are unable to help, they
will provide an appropriate referral.
The Billie Hardee Counseling Place offers diagnostic assessments,
specialized groups, individual and family therapy. Focused services
include help for kids with ADHD, school problems, life changes,
aggression, low self-esteem, anxiety and depression.
Services are available for adults with depression, stress or
anxiety troubles. Burgess points out that counseling can be of
great benefit to someone experiencing job-related stress, having
parenting or relationship issues, or when you simply need to talk
through a stressful issue with a caring, objective person. He also
notes that that low-key setting at the Counseling Place might help
those who are nervous about reaching out for mental health
assistance.
"We believe that seeking help is a sign of strength," says
Burgess, citing a simple, plainspoken Counseling Place policy which
he calls the "Three H" approach: "That's hope, health, and healing.
That's our foundation, and the goal is to reach the fourth H, which
is health."
Burgess also notes that the Billie Hardee Counseling Place has
flexible payment options and does not turn away patients based
solely on their ability to pay. They accept Medicaid and most
private insurance, and fee schedules based on income can be
arranged. All information provided is considered confidential and
will not be released without permission of the patient or their
legal guardian. The Billie Hardee Counseling Place can schedule
appointments as early as 8:30 a.m. and as late as 7 p.m. Monday
through Saturday. Their office is located at 1120 Timmonsville
Highway in Darlington. To learn more, call (843) 393-8600, ext.
